Upper Elementary (UE) Classrooms (Grades 3,4,5)
Atomic Learning
Thursday, April 11th, 2013
In the Elementary Science curriculum students learn about many topics from the Physical Sciences: energy, force, movement, solids, liquids, and gasses, the water cycle, particles, electrons, and finally in Grade 5 students learn all about atoms, different elements, and molecules. Today, our Gr.5 students had a chance to present atoms they had constructed, and share information with each other regarding the properties of each element. Students continue to focus heavily on investigation based on curiosity, and have demonstrated a love of Science and learning about the world around them.

Collaborative Problem Solving in 4B
Thursday, March 21st, 2013
Multi-step word problems are often difficult for Elementary students working in a second language, and developing organizational skills for dealing with abstract or complex problems. After identifying problem solving as an area we wish to strengthen, teachers and students have been working hard to develop the skills and strategies that make problem solving simple, and help us in our everyday lives. One of the important strategies that professionals use to solve complex problems is to work collaboratively in teams. Students in 4B today were working together on attacking problems in systematic and constructive teams, proving to themselves and to others that, if you use the right approach as a team, problem solving can turn from an individual difficulty into a great group challenge.

Picnic lunch for Grade 4
Friday, March 1st, 2013
Grade 4 has a monthly picnic for students who are willing to the pay $50 of their class money. The picnic is used as an incentive for students to follow class rules and routines, complete homework, and show respect to teachers and classmates. Who doesn't enjoy a lunch on the grass or benches once a month?

My Ideal City Project
Friday, February 8th, 2013
What would your ideal city look like? Would it be made of candy and chocolate?
That´s exactly what the ideal cities created by Gr.5 students in Global Social Studies class were made of. Students combined creative ideas with delicious materials to structure their ideal city and produce a project that they could finally "sink their teeth into".

Exploring Science -- Grade 5 students demonstrate physical properties and natural ecosystems
Thursday, January 31st, 2013
Grade 5 students have been very busy, exploring the world of scientific discovery. Using various measuring tools and strategies, the students explored physical properties of objects in our Elementary Science lab. Others converted their classroom into a ecosystems exhibition, hanging mobiles with ecosystem inhabitants around their classroom.

Working With Words -- 3A students develop literacy skills through kinesthetic learning
Thursday, January 31st, 2013
There are many ways to become better readers and writers. Reading is certainly one of the best ways to develop language skills, but sometimes we need to use movement, manipulative materials, colors, and social interaction to help our minds to learn difficult language skills. Students in 3A found lots of different ways to practice their literacy skills, and had fun while practicing.

Grade 4 students use reading comprehension techniques to learn about body systems
Monday, January 28th, 2013
Students in 4B are discovering important facts about the human body, while at the same time practicing the reading comprehension strategies they´ve learned this year. Non-fiction reading is incredibly important to future success, and strong reading comprehension skills can lead to strong achievement in many other areas. With MAP tests coming up next week, it´s great to see students getting as much practice as possible!

3B Studies Living Things in our own playground
Thursday, January 17th
Students in 3B decided to take their Science learning outside. The class used observation skills to learn about living things, asking important questions about the environment in which they were found. Students worked in pairs or groups of 3 to observe, record, and make conclusions on the things they found: Where did they come from? What were they? Were they living or non-living?
It´s great to see our young scientists outside exploring our world -- Congratulations to Ms. Melida and 3B!

Grade 4 creates landforms with their own hands
Wednesday, December 5th, 2012
Mountains, valleys, deltas, and plains: Students in Grade 4 used their own hands to mold and decorate landforms on their imaginary islands, creating presentations that were both innovative and informative. By properly labeling all of the geographic features of their model islands, students learned about the area of topigraphical geography, at the same time as practicing clear organizational skills.

5A Preparation for the UE Science Fair
Thursday, November 8th
Students in 5A were busy discussing ideas and topics for the Upper Elementary Science Fair, scheduled for December 12th. It was great to see the students´ level of engagement, as well as the respectful way they followed classroom expectations. I can see that they´re already excited about the event -- I´m sure the presentations will be as strong as last year, or stronger!
