ES Programs
Daily 5 is a system that teaches students how to make independent literacy choices, allowing the teacher to work with students individually and in small groups. These choices include: read-to-self, word work, read-to-someone, listening to reading, and writing.
SIPPS is the phonics program that is used in first and second grade. Students break into small groups to practice different letter sounds and sight words.
DLI is a weekly program which helps students to practice different writing skills, such as proofreading and editing their spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.
UE Electives: Every quarter, students from Grades 3 to 5 are given the chance to select a weekly elective class of their choice based on their own personal interests. Teachers and some parent volunteers offer a variety of classes addressing all different kinds of interests where students can enjoy and learn at the same time.
Advisory is a special moment where teacher and students can express what they feel and how they can improve as a group through games, Tribes activities and dynamic lessons.
DRA2 / EDL2 are reading assessments in English and Spanish given at least 2 times a year to allow teachers to test students individually on fluency and comprehension of reading. These tests assign a reading level for students to help determine books to read and make guided reading groups or work with CAFE strategies.
MAP is an important computer-based test taken by all students from Gr.3-10 three times a year. The test provides important data on student understanding which helps teachers to track progress and better focus and differentiate instruction. MAP tests are taken in Math, Reading, and Language Usage.
Bell Work is a time every morning dedicated to warming up and motivating students to get their thinking skills ready for the day.
Destination Imagination is a program which encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus, and frame challenges while incorporating science, technology, engineering, mathematics, the arts, and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams may showcase their solutions at a regional tournament held each spring and perhaps represent their country at Global Finals in the United States.

Student of the Month
Students are the Month are selected based on specific values for each month of the school year. Students who are recognized as Student of the Month are announced in the monthly flag raising ceremony and presented with a certificate and bracelet from the previous Student of the Month from their class. Their photos and a description of the positive values and behavior they demonstrated are posted in our Student of the Month bulletin board opposite the ES Auditorium. Students may be recognized as Student of the Month up to 2 times during the school year.
Note: This space will be used to describe some of the academic programs which are central to our educational program in ES. Please check back often, and let me know names of programs that you would like explained to the ES community. As always, you can write me at [email protected].
